Sandakphu: The Roof of West Bengal

Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal (3,636 m), is a trekker’s paradise. This ridge offers an iconic panoramic view of four of the five highest peaks in the world—Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. The route is lined with rhododendrons, magnolias, and exotic Himalayan flora. Whether you choose to trek or take a 4x4 ride, Sandakphu promises unmatched scenic beauty and a spirit of adventure.

How to Reach

  • By Air: Bagdogra Airport is the closest, about 115 km from Manebhanjan, the base for the Sandakphu trek.
  • By Road: Reach Manebhanjan from Darjeeling or Siliguri via shared jeeps. From here, either trek or hire a Land Rover to Sandakphu.
  • By Train: NJP railway station is the nearest major station. From here, take a taxi to Manebhanjan.

Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (March–May): The blooming season—perfect for rhododendron treks; temperature stays between 8°C to 15°C.
  • Autumn (October–November): Crisp skies and clear views of the snow peaks.
  • Winter (December–February): Snow-laden trails; not ideal unless you are an experienced trekker.
