Meghalaya: The Abode of Clouds

Meghalaya, aptly named the "Abode of Clouds", is a magical state filled with mist-covered hills, cascading waterfalls, living root bridges, and caves carved by time. Home to some of the world’s rainiest places like Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, Meghalaya offers otherworldly landscapes and unique Khasi and Jaintia cultures. Explore crystal-clear rivers in Dawki, the natural wonders of Mawlynnong (Asia’s cleanest village), and Shillong—the vibrant hill capital.

How to Reach

  • By Air: Shillong Airport (Umroi) is the nearest, but has limited flights. Guwahati Airport (Assam) is more commonly used, with good connectivity. From Guwahati, Meghalaya is a 3-hour drive.
  • By Road: Meghalaya is best accessed by road from Assam. Taxis and shared cabs operate from Guwahati to Shillong and beyond.
  • By Train: The nearest railhead is Guwahati. From there, drive or take a taxi into Meghalaya.

Best Time to Visit

  • Winter (November–February): Cool and ideal for travel; temperatures range from 4°C to 15°C in the hills.
  • Summer (March–June): Pleasant weather, ideal for outdoor exploration and waterfalls.
  • Monsoon (July–September): Extremely rainy, but perfect for witnessing Meghalaya’s famed waterfalls in full glory.
